Reading Judges 4:1-9 (NRSV)

I just re-watched a movie, Arrival, that has surprising parallels to today’s reading. When aliens visit earth in the movie, the hero is not a world leader or military expert. The hero is a communicator; one who can receive and convey messages and enlist help from others to save the day.

Likewise, in today’s reading, Deborah is a communicator who receives and conveys messages from God. People come to talk with her and hear her wise judgment. When her nation is oppressed by an alien king and mighty forces, Deborah recruits a military leader, promises to help, but warns this Barak that no matter how successful he is, he will not receive the glory of victory.

What superpowers are displayed in today’s story? Deborah listens, conveys God’s message, recruits a leader, and promises her help. Barak listens to Deborah, asks for help beyond military might, and moves forward despite knowing he will not get credit for it. It takes both of them, supporting each other, to set up the conditions for eventual victory.

Perhaps communicating, enlisting help, and supporting each other are sufficient superpowers. Maybe Deborah and Barak are both heroes.

Who are our heroes today? What can we do to support them?

Let us pray. Victorious God, thank you for stories of biblical people who supported one another. Help us to emulate such heroes in our own lives, tap into your superpower, and support those who oppose oppression wherever it occurs. Amen.
