Reading Matthew 7:24-27, Hebrews 3:4 (NRSV)
In today’s reading, Jesus tells his listeners to hear his words and act on them. People who act on his words are like builders who use solid rock as a foundation, rather than building on sand. When the storms of life come, a house built on rock does not fall.
Likewise, if we build our spiritual house on the rock of God’s words in Jesus, it will not fall.
On what foundation is your spiritual house built?
Childhood Sunday School may have made a good start: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
People who were feeling loved when they heard about Jesus loving them likely have a solid foundation for love and faith.
For people who have never experienced unconditional love, the foundations likely have some sand and grit getting in the way of building a solid spiritual house.
That’s where hearing and acting on the words of Jesus can help: loving others helps them to understand the love of Jesus.
Jesus loves us. We can stabilize our own and others’ foundations if we love as Jesus loves us.
Let us pray. Loving God, you are the builder of all things. You sent Jesus to show us how you love us. You also give us the choice to build creatively with you. Help us to build on the foundation of your love, trusting that your power will hold us steady during the storms of life. Amen.
